Inquiry: my son recently went to get his sticker they told him he would have to pay his fine before they could give him his sticker so he did and they gave him his sticker . He then recieved a letter aabout a week later saying his license was suspended because of the ticket . so we asumed that that had to be wrong because he paid the fine nothing was said about the supension. And now he was pulled over because of a suspended license, the police officer told him he could fight it and probably win because they also sent him his new license. to me this doesn’t make sence but does he have to pay for the reinstate in the city this all happened or can he pay it where he lives now
Response: If a fine is unpaid, then a suspension may be applied against the driver’s licence. Once a suspension has been applied, two things must be done to remove the suspension. First, the fine must be paid or an extension of time to pay the fine must be approved by the court. Secondly, the reinstatement fee ($150) must be paid to the MTO. A conviction for Driver Under Suspension carries a total payable fine between $1,250 and $,6,250 on a first offence, a mandatory further suspension of licence for 6 months, and possible jail time.
