Inquiry: I have received a speeding ticket for going 128KM/H on a posted 100KM/H zone. I am thinking about hiring X-coppers to help me fight my ticket because i do not want to gain 3 dermerit points and have my insurance go up. I need advice, should I fight the ticket myself and hopefully get away with gaining dermerit points (Officer may not show up) or should I hire a professional lawyer (X-copper) but if we lose… I will have to pay the ticket, gain dermerit points & pay the lawyer $300 + HST. This is my first traffic ticket.

Response:  To be careful with wording, companies such as X-Coppers and Ticket Defenders are paralegals, not lawyers.  Paralegals and lawyers are both licenced and regulated by the law society, but generally have different credentialing and areas of practice.  At 28 km/h over the speed limit, you are in the high-end of the 3 demerit point range of Speeding offence.  As such, whether or not the charge can be reduced will depend upon a number of factors such as your driving history and the Court that your case will be appearing before.  With every case that appears before the Court there is always the possibility that the charge will go to conviction as originally issued.  Hiring a paralegal does not guarantee that your charge will be dismissed or reduced, but it does provide you a much better chance of a positive outcome.  If you would like to review your case in more detail with one of our staff, we offer a free initial consultation via our toll-free number 1-866-801-8299.
