Inquiry:  Hi, I was driving my dad’s car which had expired license plates- 5 months overdue. The ticket is $110. I would like to contest it cos it is a lot of money and I am a student. Is it worth contesting or should I just pay?

Response:  To be accurate, we would need to review the ticket to confirm details of the charge.  It does however sound that the charge you’ve been inssued is a zero demerit point offence.   Paying the fine will mean pleading guilty to the charge and it will result in a conviction on your driver’s licence history; depending on your insurance company and your driving history you may or may not have an impact on your insurance rate.  Unfortunately, the cost of fighting the charge would be higher than the fine of the ticket, likely being about $300 and tax beginning to end.  Unless you will be incurring higher insurance rates, you may want to consider simply paying the charge in this case.  If you would like us to review your case in more detail, we can be contacted via our toll-free number 1-866-801-8299.
