Inquiry: my daughter was caught speeding (129km in a 80 km zone). how many points will she loose?  and what are the chances that she might not loose any?

Response:  At 49 km/h over the speed limit, the charge falls into the second-highest category of speeding offence (30 to 49 km/h over the speed limit) and carries 4 demerit points.  While it is possible that her speed was measured and charged at 129 km/h, when I see a case like this my first assumption is that the speed was reduced from the highest range of speeding charges (50+ km/h) where the vehicle is impounded at roadside and the licence suspended on the spot.  If your daughter has a G1 or G2 licence, or is 21 years of age or younger, the MTO will apply a mandatory suspension against her licence if she is convicted of an offence carrying 4 or more demerit points.  Given the suspension and insurance issues involved, I would recommend speaking with one of our staff in more detail about her case via our toll-free number 1-866-801-8299.
