Inquiry: I have a G2. I was given speeding ticket on HWY 401. for 135km/hr. limit was 100km/hr. I paid the fine 265 $. Then I received a notice from Ontario Ministry of Transport about my license suspension for 30 days. I had no knowledge of License suspension. Do I have to submit my driver’s license on date specified? can i keep license with me? and not drive?
Response: Any driver with a class 1 or class 2 licence that receives a conviction for any single charge carrying 4 or more demerit points is subject to the escalating sanctions legislation. The letter from the MTO will provide information on surrendering your licence. This is a case where unfortunately by not contesting the charge you will be facing a 4 demerit point conviction, licence suspension, and almost certainly serious insurance issues. Generally, a charge of being 35 km/h over the speed limit can at least be reduced to a lesser speeding offence to avoid the bulk of these problems. In the future should you receive any more charges, we offer a no-cost initial review of cases to provide some basic feedback on penalties and what will likely occur at court. Ten to fifteen minutes on the phone can end up saving thousands of dollars in increased insurance or suspension of licence.
